Facilities Technician I - Apprentice

About This Role

An Apprenticeship at Biogen is a pathway to a long-term career in the biopharmaceutical industry. The 12-month program is a role directly within our operations combined with enrollment with a registered partner Community College to continue furthering your education. Throughout the program, you will be supported by customized on-the-job training and mentorship from trusted and experienced members of your team. 

Our teams of Facilities Technicians are critical to the success of our operations, which make a positive difference in patient lives. You will learn to operate and repair all plant utilities that supply manufacturing. These include medium pressure boilers, chillers, cooling towers, air compressors, Reverse Osmosis, USP water systems, water softeners, WFI stills, clean steam generators, sterility isolators, parts washers, fire monitoring systems, sprinkler systems, HEPA Certifications, bio safety cabinets, process waste streams, electrical systems including lighting, and nitrogen compressed gas delivery systems.

What You’ll Do

  • Learn to assist other Facilities team members with daily readings and basic repairs of utility systems; responding to alarms for all associated GMP and controlled spaces
  • Develop a basic knowledge of HVAC-R (stability chambers, freezers, cold rooms)
  • Participate in site-specific hazardous waste training and take part in on-the-job learning to offload, inspect, operate, maintain, and repair hazardous waste tank systems and components
  • Log readings on various plant equipment systems
  • Assist in monitoring utility systems through the BMS and ParCS control systems
  • Participate in walkthroughs and tours of the mechanical spaces to ensure no adverse events have occurred
  • Learn to operate in a production environment with the highest degree of safety and quality

 

Qualifications

Who You Are
You are a natural problem solver and team player with a mechanical aptitude that is eager to learn new technical equipment and processes. This position will provide you the opportunity to collaborate with a broader engineering and maintenance group to begin growing your career.

Required Skills 

This work requires occasionally climbing ladders, crawling into tight spaces, moving/lifting test equipment up to 50 lbs. as well as working in clean spaces where gowning is required. Ability to stand for up to 3 hours at a time is also required.

  • Must be at least 18 years or age and hold a High School Diploma (or equivalent)
  • Apprenticeship Program Willing & able to complete additional coursework while working for Biogen as per NC BioNetwork Apprenticeship program requirements.
  • Mechanical aptitude – familiarity with hand & power tools, interpretation of mechanical-specific drawings or technical data sheets
  • Basic computer skills (Microsoft Office Suite)
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions for complex tasks
  • Strong communication (written and verbal), organization, and time management skills
