Figuring out what to wear between Christmas and New Year’s is always a bit of a conundrum.
On one hand, I’m worn out from the red and green that’s been ubiquitous since before Thanksgiving. But on the other, I’ll be in holiday mode until long after New Year’s.
But Meredith and I found the perfect compromise: gold! Metallics still capture that wintery wonderfulness, but they’re a more subtle nod to the holiday season. After all, gold, metallics, and even sequins have become year-round staples.
Plus, when worn correctly, gold is actually perfect for the office—it brightens up your complexion, it complements most hair colors, and it takes away from those harsh fluorescent lights.
But, keep in mind that, when it comes to metallics, less is definitely more. We recommend limiting the color to one gorgeous piece, or trying gold accessories. Earrings are our favorite way to add bling, but a fun cocktail ring or statement watch are also great options. Metallics make a bold statement, and the last thing you want is to feel overdressed.
I fell in love with this top. It was an Upper East Side, brandless thrift store find ($12!) and the profits went to cancer research—an all around perfect post-holiday purchase. In addition to wearing it as a shell under a cardigan or blazer during the day, I can ditch the outerwear and wear it out for post-office cocktails. (The Norman Ambrose shift—or this cheaper lookalike is also great for this, but it’s a little impractical for those of us bound by more conservative dress codes.)
A holiday look that’s perfect for work and play? We’ll raise our glasses to that!
Wishing you all a happy and successful New Year!
