Autumn in New York is, in a word, magical. The leaves morph into a rainbow of fiery colors (yes, there are trees here—especially in Brooklyn!), a cool breeze replaces oppressive humidity, and an invigorating energy is in the air.

Inspired by the weather, I pulled my winter work wardrobe out of hibernation this weekend and had a realization: my cold-weather clothes are pretty lacking in quantity and color. And if there’s ever a season not to be buried in black and grey, it’s this one—bright, bold, jewel-toned colors are everywhere.

The gorgeous crimson hue that was all over the fall 2011 runways has particularly gotten our attention. There’s something about wearing deep red that makes us feel empowered, feminine, and chic all at once.

While the coat fits into acceptable corporate attire, the military buttons, ladylike lace detail, and standout color make it exceptionally one-of-a-kind.

Best of all, a coat is a great way to wear this bold shade without making too big of a statement. Crimson packs a bit too much saturation for a head-to-toe outfit, so for the office, it’s best to keep it to accessories and outerwear.

That said, Meredith and I have found that it’s totally safe (and fun!) to take fashion risks with your outerwear. Of course it’s important to maintain a polished, professional look (who knows who you’ll run into in the elevator!).

But, since you’re not in your cold weather accessories all day, you can make a bolder statement than you would with your everyday attire. If you’re usually nervous about busting out bright colors at work, try wearing bold jackets, scarves, and gloves—all great avenues for experimentation!

You can also try a pair of patent leather crimson pumps—they’ll work with most dark winter colors, and you won’t have to take them off once you get inside. And crimson lipstick? No matter the season, we think that’s always in style.
