Although I’m in the camp that we should be pushing and improving ourselves year round, there’s just something exciting about the fresh start that a new year brings. So every year, I make a few New Year’s resolutions: something to do with fitness, something to do with organization, and something to do with my career. And as cliché as these all sound, I’m sure you’ve made some similarly categorized resolutions of your own!
But, of course, the percentage of people who actually keep said New Year’s resolutions is pretty low. (Surveys are scattered, but hover around 10%.) Some experts say that willpower dwindles as the year drags on, which I agree with, but to take a lighter approach, I would posit that we fail to keep our resolutions for the very simple reason that they usually aren’t very fun. Dieting, exercising more, quitting smoking—these aren’t usually things people get excited about.
So this year, why not start by giving yourself something to make your resolutions a little more fun? Here are four common resolutions—and ideas on how to up the excitement factor by looking stylish while doing them!
1. Get in Shape
This, of course, is one of the most common resolutions—and the most commonly dreaded. So what’s the solution to getting pumped up (pun intended) about working out? Start with some fun exercise clothes! Think bold, bright colors that you’ll love to throw on and that’ll brighten up even the darkest winter days. (P.S. I own and love the pink Therafit shoes—and they’re super comfy.)
2. Eat Out Less, Cook in More
We’d all love to eat better and save money, and there’s no better way to do both than by cooking at home more often. So grab a new cookbook or two, then pick up fun aprons and some practical-yet-playful cooking accessories to get you excited about hanging out in the kitchen.
3. Travel More
Even if you don’t have the PTO to take any trips abroad, some stylish travel gear will get you inspired to take a few mini-vacations. Ditch the basic black roll-aboard and mix things up by choosing luggage with a little twist. (Hey, it’ll help you at baggage claim!)
4. Read More
Want to commit a little extra time to reading this year, instead of getting home and flipping on the TV? Get some good suggestions on hard-to-put-down reads, download a few on your Kindle or iPad, then pick up a fun cover for the technology of your choice. Or, grab a few cute bookmarks, if you’re still reading regular ol’ books, like me!
