It’s 105 degrees outside—and it feels more like 150. You’ve just spent an hour dripping through your subway commute, grateful that someone invented deodorant (though you’d be even more appreciative if everyone chose to use it). Then, you walk in to your office, catching a glimpse of your once-perfect makeup in the elevator mirror.
Suddenly, you understand the true meaning of hot mess.
Well, the good news is, tomorrow is a new day. And while you may not be able to turn down the scorching summer heat, you can still look calm, cool, and collected with a few quick tips and genius products.
1. Skip the Heavy Foundation
Really—it will get gooey in a flash when it’s hot outside. Instead, use a sheer primer or tinted moisturizer like Sonia Kashuk Radiant Tinted Moisturizer SPF 15 ($13.69, Target.com) to even out your skin tone with no detectable color. Then, dab a heavier long-wearing concealer, like Maybelline Cover Stick Waterproof Concealer ($4.49, CVS.com), only where you need it. Finish with a light veil of translucent powder just on your t-zone, which tends to get oilier and sweatier.
2. Layer Your Blush
Applying two different textures of blush can make it last longer (and still look natural, as long as you’re using similar colors). Start with a liquid version like LORAC Sheer Wash ($20, Beauty.com), then add a powder or cream formula on top. Even if the top layer melts a bit, you’ll still be covered.
3. Slough and Stain Lips
The smoother your lips, the longer your lipstick will hold, so start by buffing away any dry flakes with a soft toothbrush. Next, opt for a liquid stain like the LORAC Sheer Wash you’d use on your cheeks or Revlon Just Bitten Lip Stain + Balm ($8.99, drugstore.com).
Or try this cheap, long-lasting (and super fun) alternative: Wet the end of a Q-Tip with water and dip in a bag of Cherry Kool-Aid. With your mouth closed, place the Q-Tip in the center of your lips and slide back and forth. The color will last for hours! Top with gloss for a bit of shine, or for even more color, smooth on a moisturizing lip stain like Maybelline Super Stay 10 Hour Stain Gloss ($8.99, Ulta.com).
4. Waterproof Your Eyes
Raccoon eyes are a virtual certainty this time of year, even if you’re not hitting the beach or pool. But there are a couple key secrets to avoiding them. First, replace your regular mascara with a waterproof version, like CoverGirl LashBlast 24HR Mascara ($7.99, soap.com). The wide, round brush creates plenty of volume that won’t get limp or sticky throughout the day (and will even last well into the night). If you can’t bear to part with your current mascara, make it waterproof by topping it with a layer of Anastasia Beverly Hills Lash Genius Waterproof Topcoat ($21, Anastasia.net).
No, you may not be able to turn down the temperature, but with a few small tweaks to your routine, you’ll look great, no matter how sweltering it is out there.
