I don’t often use this column to tout specific brands. But every now and then, I find one or two I love so much that, while I want to keep them as my own little secret, I realize that I should spread the word and not be a selfish brand hoarder.
So, here I am, talking about some of my absolute favorite lines—and I’m pretty psyched to share them with you. These companies not only make products that will stand the test of time (and that are obviously gorgeous), but they also have awesome concepts behind them. Come on, I wouldn’t waste your time talking about so-so companies!
I first met the ladies of Cuyana at a Daily Muse event and fell in love with their simple but timeless design aesthetic and amazing quality. I immediately bought what would become one of my all-time favorite articles of clothing—an unbelievably soft alpaca vest. I also recently picked up a caramel tote that is made of the most supple leather you can imagine and is such a classic and streamlined design that I carry it every day to work.
Aside from the great products and the beautifully designed website (I’m a sucker for pretty web design), the amazing team over at Cuyana has a humbling mission: They travel the world and work with local craftsmen to create unique, limited-edition accessories out of indigenous materials. Plus, a portion of all proceeds goes to charity:water, which brings clean and safe drinking water to people in developing nations.
Okay, get ready—because this is one of the coolest concepts for a company I’ve heard of in a long time: Designers sketch, you vote, Stitch creates. Stitch gets hundreds of sketches from emerging designers around a single theme for a bag and picks its 12 favorites. Then—and here’s where it gets interesting—Stitch lets people vote on their favorite. The winning bag gets put in to production and sold on the site! It’s a double win: New or otherwise unknown designers get their work showcased and customers get to have a little fun deciding what gets put in to production.
The two bags in my pictures are now in heavy rotation in my wardrobe. The large envelope clutch is my go-to night bag—the quality of the leather is so amazing and the design is simple and elegant. The leopard bag is great because it easily transitions from day to night—just take off the chain strap and convert it from a cross-body bag to a clutch.
A company dedicated to making the highest quality knitwear possible, Suss designs is run by Suss Cousins, a woman who has been working with textiles since she was a child in Sweden. She draws inspiration from Scandinavian design, which makes her pieces trendy but timeless. Suss’ knits range from loungey shorts and tops to beautifully designed sweaters, hats, and scarves, and are all made out of cozy materials like cashmere or high-quality cotton. Although a bit on the pricey side, these products will last forever (and keep you warm!).
This brown sweater is super comfortable and can be layered to feel heavier or lighter depending on the season. The yellow top is perfect for working out (or cuddling with your favorite pup), and is light enough to wear with other shirts without looking bulky. I’ve been wearing it to bed almost every night because it’s so comfy!
