Tell us about yourself! (Sorry for the “interview question.”)
I’m Brazilian, and a recent Yale graduate stranded between Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and New York (not a bad place to be stuck, mind you). Before this job, I was working in economic consulting in Brazil. Over the next few years, I’m hoping to have at least one, but maybe more, exciting jobs. I’m also hoping to run a marathon, make it to Asia, and learn at least one programming language.
What were you looking for in a job?
I was looking for ideas that made me say, “Holy cow, that’s exciting.” Since I had just started at a job, I wasn’t necessarily searching for a new position. I just told myself that, if I happened to come across something more exciting, I would pursue it. Voxy was exactly that—a “Holy cow, I need to get involved right now” idea.
Why are you excited about this job?
I think the most exciting part about my job is that it’s always on my mind. I’ll be walking home from work and something will occur to me—something we can do to improve our product, or maybe another company we can partner with—and I immediately want to e-mail my bosses to share my ideas. So far, I’ve gotten pretty good responses, too! People here are very open to different ideas.
What attracted you to the company?
At first, I was attracted to Voxy by the Marketing Associate job description—which seemed like a really good fit—and then I decided to browse its company page, only to find that it was an even better fit. The descriptions of the environment at Voxy, like “Everyone is learning a language” and “I’m so excited that I get to work on this project every day,” convinced me it was at least worth throwing my hat in the ring.
Is there anything from The Daily Muse that helped you out in your job hunt?
The Daily Muse helped me keep my job application materials (cover letters, resume, LinkedIn profile) up to date, even though I thought I’d be staying at my current job for a while. I would read an article on how to improve my resume, or something like that, and I’d immediately apply the changes so that I wouldn’t forget to do it later.
Also, by virtue of reading many of The Daily Muse’s articles, I would sometimes wander to the company profiles on The Muse and check out jobs, even though I didn’t think of myself as looking for new positions. In many ways, The Daily Muse kept me open to and ready for new opportunities.
What advice would you have for someone who wanted a job like yours?
This is going to sound a little obvious, but the best thing you can do is to take some creative liberty with your career. Just because you’re currently working in a certain industry, doesn’t mean you can’t entirely change what you do. Stay open to opportunities that excite you, even if they weren’t previously part of the spectrum of careers you imagined yourself having.
