From Bad to Worse: The Facts About UTIs & Kidney Infections

The Facts about UTIs and Kidney Infections

You know those few friends who seem to get UTI’s all the time? No biggie, they say. Just run to the doc, pop some antibiotics, and the annoyance is kicked (until the next time it happens). I was never one of those women, and I naïvely assumed I never would be. UTIs just weren’t something I got, I thought.

Until I did. In retrospect, the signs were clear: I had to pee every two seconds, and it was painful when I did. At first, I thought it was constipation. Then, I thought it was a bad reaction from the laxative that I took for the constipation that it wasn’t. Later, I thought it was the flu. For a fleeting moment, I even let pregnancy cross my mind. But a UTI? That simple, silly, easily treatable little thing? It wasn’t even on my radar.

So, like a very bad women’s health columnist would do, I ignored my symptoms (see my head drooping in shame). I had a big trip coming up, deadlines looming, and shopping and packing lists to check off before hitting the road. These things pass, right?

Well it passed, alright—straight up into my kidney, where it festered for over 10 days. I had a terrible fever, the chills, and constant discomfort and swelling in my back and belly. It wasn’t until I returned home and finally went to the doctor that I found out that a kidney infection was to blame. To save the organ at that point, I needed to be pumped with several bags of IV fluids, a nice fat shot of painkiller, and some serious antibiotics.

But worst of all, I learned this whole mess could have been avoided with a quick trip to the clinic, if I’d gone when I first saw signs of trouble. Here’s what you need to know to make sure you never let a UTI get the better of you.

1. What’s a UTI?

A UTI (urinary tract infection) is pretty much what it sounds like: an infection caused by bacteria in your urinary system—your bladder, kidney, and the tubes that connect them. The infection is very common—the second most common type of infection in the body, in fact—and is particularly prevalent in women, in part because of the way we’re wired down below.

2. What are the symptoms?

The first telltale sign is pain when you pee. It’s not always sharp or burning pain, but it’s an obvious discomfort. You may feel like you have to go all the time, even though not much comes out when you do. Your urine may also smell funky and could have spots of blood in it. Any or all of these signs point pretty clearly to UTI.

3. What’s a kidney infection?

As I found out the hard way, a kidney infection is what happens when you don’t take care of a UTI.  The bacteria spreads to your bladder and then continues on to one or both of your kidneys, organs that help filter your blood and produce urine. Symptoms can include a fever, abdominal or back pain, chills or night sweats, and just generally feeling awful. I mistook it for a bad cold or flu (but of course, I failed to take into consideration that I had no accompanying sore throat, stuffy nose, or cough). But unlike a cold, the symptoms won’t let up. Without treatment, an infection can cause permanent kidney damage or blood poisoning, and can even be life-threatening.

4. What causes a UTI and how can I prevent one?

Bacteria can get trapped for a lot of reasons, but the usual culprit among young women is sex. Simply by peeing before and after sex, you can significantly reduce your chances of getting a UTI—doing so helps flush bad bacteria away from your urinary tract. In general, just keeping clean—and not by doing anything excessive like douching (does anyone think that’s a good idea anymore?)—will help keep the unwanted bacteria at bay.

Also, if you enjoy tasty cranberry cocktails, indulge away! The juice has been shown to help prevent UTIs by making it more difficult for bacteria to stick to the walls of the urinary tract and multiply.

5. What do I do if I have one?

If you notice any signs of a UTI or kidney infection, visit your doctor ASAP. He or she will probably take a urine sample, and possibly a blood test, and give you a prescription for antibiotics. Although over-the-counter pain-relievers like AZO can make you more comfortable while you wait for the drugs to kick in, they will not treat the infection.

Usually, antibiotics plus plenty of liquids will get you better in no time. And as with most things, the earlier it’s caught, the easier it’s treated and the faster you’ll recover.

While it’s true that some women do get UTIs more often than others—and some even get them chronically—no one is immune. And unfortunately, infections don’t care whether or not there’s room for them on your calendar. As I learned, not everything gets better with time, tea, and wishful thinking. So keep a lookout for the symptoms, keep an open mind when self-diagnosing, and remember: if you don’t take care of it now, you’ll pay for it later.

Love cranberry juice, but know it's a no-no if you have kidney stones.

I get UTIs all the time, or I used to. I gave up soda and most juices because the sugar in them is what was prompting all my infections. Now I drink only water and have for years and rarely get a UTI (I used to get maybe 5 a year before, now I'm lucky if I get 1 or 2.) The thing about UTIs is you have to get a jump on it right away. As soon as you start to suspect one (my pee will usually burn a little, or be a little dark like apple juice) I swear off everything except water and cranberry juice. I drink enormous amounts and pee every hour. Holding your pee can also cause UTIs, I'm a chronic pee holder. You can also drink a little apple cider vinegar to help with UTIs, there is lots of info about this on the net. A little warning though, if you have oxalate kidney stones (I do) stop the cranberry juice as soon as you're over your infection. Cranberry juice exacerbates the forming of kidney stones, otherwise I'd be shot-gunning it everyday. And I'm not a doctor but if your infection doesn't get better by day 2 of the water, cranberry and vinegar regimen, or if you end up with a fever, go straight to the doctor. Boyfriend ended up with a 102 fever for 3 days straight because of a bad UTI (he did not treat it early and thought it was the flu even though his pee burned.)

Hi, just to clarify, cranberry juice is wonderful for a utility but it HAS to be the straight stuff, you know the stuff that is bitter and doesn't taste anything like a cocktail. If u drink the stuff with sugar all it does is make the infection worse because sugar feeds the bacteria.

Hi all... Iv had a few UTIs before and they have just cleared up without any treatment. So when I noticed the symptoms of a UTI about 1 week ago, I just thought I'd ride it out but no!!!!!! I have now got a kidney infection and I am in the worst pain ever. I can't sleep because I am so uncomfortable with pain, my lower back is swollen on the right side, I have been experiencing bad fever/shivering/delusional during the night and I'm dosing myself up with pain relief to get me through the day. The worst part: I'm from England and have been living in America for 2weeks and I'm too scared to visit a doctor incase my medical insurance won't cover it and I get charged $$$$$$$$$$ :-(.. Don't ignore UTIs

I have a uti I've been ignoring. My kidneys hurt but its just a dull uncomfortable pain.

Last 3 days I've had pink urine and today I noticed a few small blood clots. I'm freaked out now. I'm about to go to the ER.I haven't had severe pain or burning so I figured it wasn't that bad. Only thing that bugged me is the nausea and constant urge to pee. Anyone else have a uti like that?

Hi Ashley, You are not by yourself I had the same symptoms. I'm 27 years old. I was vomiting every where my stomach felt like somebody keep punching me in it. I had to lay on the floor that seem like the only way I will feel a little better. I went to the ER room because the pain was awful. They gave me two shots of Morphine. That stop the pain and help me from vomiting. They took blood and did urine test and of course it came back and said I had a UTI. They gave me antibiotics and that cleared up the UTI. But I'm going try the lady soma cranberry and see if that helps keep them away.

I'm a 28 year old female. About 8 months ago I had a uti and i ignored it stupidly because i didnt have time to go to the doctor. After a week the burning went away and I thought my body just fought the infection itself, oh I was so wrong. Two months later my abdomen and left side of my back hurt so bad i couldnt move, i spiked a fever of 106 which persisted for ten days it would go down after ice cold wash cloths i put on my head n then half hour later right back up to 106, I went to er three times the second time the doctor was very rude and demanded I get a spinal tap, which I refused I had no other signs for menigitis as she thought I had. I asked for a cat scan several times she denied me n sent me on my way two days later it was still as bad as ever I went back to er where a new dr listened to me, admitted me sent me for a cat scan after everything else came back normal, blood counts normal, urine normal no infection finally the cat scan picked up a massive left kidney infection. I had to be hospitalized for three additional days getting pumped with antibiotics iv style and pain mess around the clock, which I had to rake home along with another set of antibiotics, which I took every one till gone. So please if you think you have one, make the time to see a doctor, or you could end up hospitalized.

Just discovered my symptoms:

(After a voracious! cold!)

Constant urge to urinate!

Pain, pressue, some abdominal pain.

Occasional blood in urine

Pain urinating

Nausea

Vomiting

Horrible low back pain (doesn't respond to bayer aspirin)

Feeling like my bladder had prolapsed where it shouldn't be going...

However, all this, without a fever, for me.

DR told me I caught it early; I have a "signifigant" infection, UTI, and KIDNEY.

Cipro

Nausea Medicine

IF your having any...or several of these symptoms, please go to your doctor! It can turn deadly quickly when the infection reaches one, or both of the kidneys! All they do is take a urine sample;

no examination! It's the easiest thing to do! And it spares you a whole lotta trouble!

Dont ignore back pain!!! My daughter thought she strained her back and was complaining about mid back pain and sciatica. She is healthy and athletic and we never thought of a kidney infection nor had she ever had one before. This went on for several days until she then began running a fever and vomiting. She was miserable, never able to get comfortable and each day we thought that maybe her back pain would get better. We also thought that she was vomiting because the ibuprofen was upsetting her stomach. A simple urine test is all you need. Her suffering was totally unnecessary and hopefully she will not have permanent kidney damage. Make sure you follow up and ask for additional antibiotics (more than 7 days) so infection does not stay in your system. This was a very scary and life threatening situation! Bottom line is GET YOURSELF TO A DOCTOR OR HOSPITAL ASAP!!!

Hi my name is mariah and i am in my mid-twentys and i have been dealing with these issues my whole life after i had my child however they got completely worse, i now have constant kidney infections that no antibiotics can cure because i have been on antibiotics my whole life so my body has become immune to them. i am in the hospital atleast three times a year for two or more weeks at a time because of my infections. i drink plenty of water this was just a problem i was born with but like i said after i had my child it got way worse i have reflex of the kidneys so my urine never ever fully emptys. i have had multiple surgerys on both kidneys and stints to drain the masses of infections in them. Since i have been dealing with these problems and have steady kidney infections it is very hard for me to tell when i need to get to the hospital because the infection is life threating. i have become so use to the pain and i throw up everyday from the infections but recently in the past 6months it has got to the point where i feel as if sometimes i cant get out of the bed i am very sluggish and sleep around the clock i am so weak and that is not like me i was always the most active person very hyper and very outgoing.i have also noticed that i have been sweating more then any man or women and i have been breaking out on my face like crazy. The smell that is coming out of my body is horrible and i am a very clean person now i am even showering up to four times a day so this is something that has just got me crying everyday!! i just figured out a way to afford dialisis but i cant start for another two weeks if anyone has any tricks or tips for the sweating, odor, and the weakness that i am having i would be so greatful!!! Please any advice tips or tricks i am willing to try anything!!!!!!!!

And 2 to 3 Liters (68 ounces to 101 ounces) of water a day should be the ideal amount of water for anyone, if your sick or working out in the sun add a couple of extra glasses of water to stay well hydrated. If you are prescribed antibiotics, finish every last pill of antibiotic even if you are feeling better. Not finishing your antibiotics is like asking for a worse infection that could be antibiotic resistant. You should always eat plain yogurt and take probiotics such as Lactobacillus and bifidus on a regular basis, and you should especially take them after antibiotics because antibiotics demolish good bacteria essential to bladder, vagina, stomach, and colon health. Cranberry juice cocktail contains only 27% cranberry juice (the remainder is sweetened water), and bad bacteria thrive on sugar. Please stick to the capsules or the 100% stuff, its so easy to pop a capsule or two a day. (Totally unrelated sidenote, even cancer grows when excessive amounts of sugar are consumed. They made reduce my sugar intake to barely anything when I had Ovarian cancer). Please people skip the manufactured beverages and stick to water and 100% cran juice.....most everything else will be detrimental to your health in one way or another.

As a small 5 year old I started having at least 5 UTI's a year. The doctors were quite confused because I drank sugar free cranberry juice, I was very hygienic, and lived in a clean house. Since I was 5 I have continued to get UTI's all year round. I have had 20 kidney infections, all but one which have required hospitalizations. Since I turned 18 several years ago, I have had 7 kidney/ureter surgeries. I have also passed 48 kidney stones and had 6 stones broken apart by lithotripsy (shock waves). My right kidney once failed but they were able to repair it before I needed dialysis. My nephrologist (kidney doctor) still hasn't been able to determine why my kidney malfunction so badly, only how to treat it. For some people like myself who have a pathological and anatomical problem, UTI's are unavoidable parts of life even though I am on antibiotics most of the year. But for those who don't have these sorts of problems here are my tips I have learned through my medical backround: Always wear 100% Cotton Underwear, urinate after sex, drink 100% cranberry juice, if you do not like cranberry juice there are several vitamin companies that make cranberry capsule supplements, never douche, never use scented soap or body wash to cleanse yourself down there (use a mild scentless soap or just warm water), pads are less likely to encourage a UTI than tampons are, showers are better than baths (baths are like soaking in your own bacteria because bacteria loves warm and wet and UTI's are bacterial infections), wipe front to back after using the toilet, don't hold it if you have to go to the bathroom. And to the man who asked about the catheter being the cause of his infection, UTI's are common when a bladder has been catheterized in a hospital, it is sad but true, I may be a 21 year old woman ....not a male but when I get catheters I always get infected. It could be other reasons then dirty instruments, it could be bacteria on another clothing article or your skin spreading up the tube into your bladder. And when I had to urinate after my car accident the catheterized me, and they said their reason was that they wanted my back and neck to stay perfectly still until they did a CT scan and x-rays to make sure the neck or spine were not broken.

Hi, no one has mentioned the use of probiotics these help all female issues like BV, thrush and UTI's especially as the antibiotics get rid of all the good bacteria as well as the bad and you need to put it back or else your system is out of balance and this leads to more UTI's etc.

Try fem-dophilus which is aimed at womens problems or something similar. HTH.

Hi, my friend was in the hospital last night because she has a UTI or possibly a Kidnet Infection. She's told my sister and I that she uses douches. (she is still a virgin) We told her she doesn't need to douche and that sometimes douching isnt good for her because they cause yeast infections and other things. Could this be the reason she has a UTI/Kidney Infection?

Dani

Hello Sara, I don't know your financial situation, but I recommend that you go to another doctor , possibly at a urgent care facility, do not go to the ER, they will bleed you dry for money. Having a kidney infection as long as you've had is seriously dangerous and you could be putting your life at risk, think about your one year old. Some suggestion that I have used my self are drinking an insane amount of water, with an infection like yours you should drink as much as a gallon a day, or if that's too much I recommend dividing your weight in half and then what ever number you get drink that many ounces throughout the day. If you are an active individual I recommend the gallon a day routine. This helps flush out the bacteria a little bit faster. Do this for as long as possible and stay away from alcohol, caffeine, and sugary drinks they make things much worse. This info is from personal experience I am now on my 5th day of really strong antibiotics and some other stuff I can't pronounce because of an untreated UTI that turned into a terrible kidney infection. I wish you the best of health and good luck I hope you get the treatment you need as soon as possible.

Best of luck,

Dani

I am NOT a medical professional- need to state that! I just have a lot of experience with UTIs. Usually I can catch it quickly because of the burning and frequency. When that happens, I start popping cranberry and garlic capsules like you wouldn't believe. I try to take them for 10 days or so, even when the symptoms are gone. I've heard that garlic is a natural antibiotic, and cranberry is good for bladder health.... that being said, I was low on them, and thought I'd try to be cheap and only take a few.. bad move. Got the chills, backache, headache, and my lymph nodes are even tender. Go figure. To those of you who can't afford it, please don't put it off- make some kind of deal with them. If it gets really bad and your kidneys get infected, you could get blood poisoning, and even die. So just another vote for going at the EARLIEST sign!

I have been fighting a severe kidney infection for over a month now. I hate going to the doctor, but after laying with a fever of 104.5 for four days and feeling like i was passing a razor blade at the end of my urination, i knew something had to be done. Went to doctor and got an antibiotic shot, next day went back got another one, that night i was hospitalized for 5 days. They gave me 2 different antibiotics through i.v 4 times a day, diflucan i.v 2 once a day for the severe yeast infection the antibiotics gave me, potassium pills, iron and folic acid, and hydrocodone for the severe pain i was having. My fever went away, but I still had the kidney infection so my doctor gave me more antibiotics. Went back and still had blood in my urine and she wrote me a script for more antibiotics that I havnt picked up yet because I am still on the first round she gave me. I have another 3 weeks of antibiotics I am going to have to take now. They are worried that me waiting as long as I did before I got treatment has damaged my kidney. Now my fever is coming back at night, nothing like it was before.....just a low grade temp. My right lower back still hurts so bad it feels as if I have been beat back there. Eating yogurt daily, taking yogurt shots, folic acid and iron still. Also prilosec because I found out I have gallbladder disease while in hospital. You should def go as soon as you start having symptoms. I am 33 year old female that had maybe 3 UTIs in my entire life and now I am going through this.

I am a 42fmle, I have always suffered from yeast, bacterial, and also uti's. I hate to go to the doctor and because I have no medical insurance, even when I need to go I cant. So a trip to the local ER, I run. I was at work a couple of weeks ago and out or NO WHERE, I broke out in a sweat and felt like I wanted to pass out, I quickly went to the bathroom to get a grip on the situation and felt I had to pee. It burned and I knew (GREAT ANOTHER UTI) on my break went to a local pharmacy picked up AZO, took it stayed and felt better. Didn't hurt again for another couple of days and when that pain hit me, I knew I needed antibiotics. Took some a girlfriend had a couple weeks prior for hers. I have taken it before, finished, then I had an allergic reaction all over my body which caused the MUCH NEEDED TRIP TO ER. They confirmed I still had the UTI, and it was bad. Full of bacteria, and said based off all info I gave I have had it for a long time. I'm on the right antibiotic now, but I have missed 4 out of 5 days worth of work. Woke up this morning with my back killing mid lower back killing me and very nauseated. NO COKES, NO COFFEE, NO SWEET TEA! (no fun!) I am on 1500 mlg of antibiotics a day, not to mention the steroids for the allergic reaction. I am miserable. I had flu like symptoms but to be honest I have felt that way for a very long time. TAKE MY ADVICE: DON'T PUT IT OFF, you can't drink the infection away with Cranberry Juice. You need antibiotics, and you need them now. Some of those superwomen that work every single day, that never miss work must think I am a hypochondriac, most women don't discuss so I've learned. I bet, I will teach them a thing or two about you and your urinary trac. I don't ever want to live through this again! Good Luck with yours, it doesn't get any better until you have antibiotics. I've tried it all!

I just went to the ER and their always saying I have a uti. I don't know if they ever go away on me because I don't go to the Dr. I have no medical card or insurance and also looking for a job but yet haveing no luck. After all the pain I was in the night before I was swelling, vomiting and etc I didn't know what was going on it seemed to hurt worse when I walked or even moved I would barly touch my left side and it hurt so bad I touch a little harder on it I could feel it all the way to my pelvis so I went to the ER and they said it was a really bad kidney infection and they gave me a 10 day supply and 5 pain meds and gave me 2 shots before I left and still hurt like hell. I can not lay on my belly because it hurts so bad. Can anyone else tell me if they have ever had one this bad Im only 20 and I don't know what to do.

ive been researching uti because i currently have one. it burns like no tomorrow when i pee and after i get a very terrible burning sensation feeling. in the mornings i wake up and how i know it didnt go away is when i have itching, terrible itching down there. Yes it is way better to go to the doctors instead of hiding it. its really nothing to be ashamed of. I have one and i have never been sexually interactive. ive hid it for about 5 months it went away at one point, or atleast thats what i thought it came back and 5 days later i went to the doctors. he gave me medicine and im still feeling pretty bad with the itching and burning. yesterday i drank cranberry juice and i felt wanderful! it was the best i felt yet .

I don't get frequent UTI's. I'm 52 and I've had maybe 3 infections. The first one was in my 20's and I went to the Dr for it.

The 2nd one was about 3 or 4 years ago. I despise going to the Dr, so I tried the Lady Soma Cranberry Concentrate. It took several days, but the infection finally went away.

Yay!

My last infection was a few months ago and again I turned to the Lady Soma Cranberry Concentrate. It took longer to clear the infection the last time, but I was determined not to make a trip to the dreaded Dr's office.

Really does work. I keep it on hand now so if I get another UTI, I can start treatment immediately.

When the uti moved to the kidneys, did you still feel the painful urination of the UTI or was it just back and belly pain, a fever and discomfort?

Anna Miller
Anna Miller

Wow, I haven't heard much about UTIs in males either, but it can certainly happen, as you unfortunately found out. All it takes is the wrong kind of bacteria --something a catheter can introduce--to get trapped in and spread through in your urinary tract. The lesson for all of us is: Just because something seems to be getting better, doesn't mean it is. In the case of a UTI-turned-kidney infection, it could actually be getting worse. Glad you finally got some help and I wish you a speedy recovery!

I'm a 27yo male and i just got out of the E.R. for a kidney infection. I never gave too much thought about UTI's due to the fact that I'm a male but i was dead wrong. About 3 weeks prior i was hospitalized after a car accident which i was fine however the doctor felt the need to use a catheter to extract urine. I dont know if the nurse had dirty hands or whatever the case may be, but i did notice a burning sensation while urinating after it was removed. I assumed the burning was because of some abrasions from the tube. I went another 2 1/2 weeks with no other major symptoms except for maybe a cloudy head. One night after drinking i couldnt even get out of bed because my middle back hurt so bad. The other terrible symptoms followed suit within moments. I had the chills, fever, a little bit of nausea, and back pain from hell. I thought this would all pass but i had to tap out and go to the E.R. Initially i thought it could have been a stone but with some research (and testing) they found my wbc count was very high and it was indeed an infection that traveled up my ureters to my right kidney. The doctor gave me a shot of morphine and an iv drip of cipro. Leaving with a prescription with antibiotics and vicodin i cant help but to be furious at the hospital that gave me the catheter. In hindsight i dont even think that was necessary and ive been in a living hell for the past 3 to 4 day confused as ever. I just hope i feel better tomorrow.

note: about 3 months ago i had volunteered to get an ultrasound by my friend thats in school for it and she found some slight calcification outside of my right kidney however it is still not clear to me if there is any correlation between the two. I hope everyone gets well soon, as for myself i still have faith.

I was just diagnosed with a UTI about a month ago. Like you, i ignored the symptoms and now im really paying for it. I have been having excruciating back point since June of last year. Finally last month i couldnt take the pain anymore and went to the emergency room. They gave me a 7 day dose of medication but it didnt help. Perhaps mine too turned into a kidney infection.

Good points, CH. I should add "virgin" to the "cranberry cocktails" comment, though the idea is that you are drinking the juice to prevent a UTI rather than to treat it. If you do get one, I agree that staying away from dehydrating beverages like alcohol and coffee is a good plan for a speedy recovery. And while 100% cranberry juice might be the ideal bev, research using the most common (and sugary) kinds of cranberry juice (think what's served on airplanes) has still proven to be effective in preventing infections.

This was really helpful! I've tried to ignore a UTI before, and I didn't even know then how bad the consequences could be. Kidney infection, ugh! Thanks so much for writing about this

Actually, alcohol is not recommended for people with UTIs (has made it worse many times, in my experiences), nor is the overly sugary cranberry juice that tends to be used in bars and in most common grocery store juices. 100% cranberry juice with no added sugar is best. It doesn't taste very good but it is better than adding sugar and alcohol to a system that's swimming with bacteria.
