Unless you’ve been living under a sound-proof rock for the past two weeks, you’ve probably heard some mention of the ubiquitous “Gangnam Style.” And if you still aren’t sure what people are talking about, we’re here to catch you up on the latest pop-culture phenomenon.
And if you can already Gangnam with the best of them? We’re here to make your day a little brighter with the best spoofs on the web.
Say What Style?
“Gangnam Style,” a song by South Korean rapper Psy, has gained incredible traction over the past three weeks (as in, it has 284,596,139 hits on YouTube to date, and reached #2 on the U.S. Billboard charts this week). The ridiculous video—sung almost entirely in Korean—brings up a lot of questions in the minds of U.S. viewers: What is he singing about? Why the horse theme? What is going on?! According to an in-depth article in The Atlantic (written before Gangnam was cool), the whole video is a satire, making fun of the wealthy neighborhood in Seoul (Gangnam) and commenting in general about class and wealth in South Korean society.
And the horse dance? Who knows, but you’ve got to admit, the guy’s got some moves.
Watch the original video below, and then scroll down for the best spoofs it has inspired!
The Original
U.S. Naval Academy
Psy was happy to see the USNA 22nd Company get in on the Gangnam trend, saying they stuck to his motto of “Dress classy, dance cheesy.” to a tee. We’re glad they did too—we definitely will not complain about watching them traipse around in their crisp white uniforms.
Oregon Duck
A different kind of uniform, but just as enjoyable. Watching the Oregon University mascot do the dance is pretty hilarious, and we have to say, he manages to get down in that duck-suit.
SNL
Of course Saturday Night Live had to have their say in the matter, and thank goodness they did. Kenan summed up the whole trend best: “That was awesome! I don’t know why—but that was awesome!”
Wedding Video
This couple decided to pay tribute to their marriage by making a spoof video with their wedding party. Now we’re waiting for someone to gallop down the aisle to Gangnam.
Start-up Style
Some of our friends in Silicon Valley decided to take a gander at making their own spoof, Gangnam-ing all over Google’s campus.
