Job Description Summary

The Los Angeles Times is seeking an ambitious, imaginative and collaborative art director to join its award-winning creative department. We're looking for someone who can assist in designing layouts for our glossy entertainment magazine, The Envelope, and other print and digital sections as needed. The best candidates will be excited to challenge the existing rules of publication design. We want weird ideas and big thoughts - and to make something that truly reflects the creativity of Los Angeles and the people who live here.

Job Description

We are looking for someone who has experience in editorial magazine design. You will be a key player on the features team whether helping to evolve The Envelope brand or bringing fresh ideas to our entertainment and lifestyle sections. Whatever the project, you'll ensure visual consistency across print and digital channels. If you love collaborative brainstorming and have the hands-on design and production skills to execute big ideas, we'd love to hear from you.

In this position, you will:
  • Design and art-direct features and inside pages for weekly magazine or newspaper sections
  • Assist with art-direction of photo shoots in fashion, style, still life and portraits
  • Develop and maintain the style manual in conjunction with design directors
  • Continue to grow our database of illustrators and photographers, with a focus on finding L.A.-based contributors
  • Commission illustrators
  • Coordinate projects for both digital and print
  • Create and maintain organizational documents
  • Design and art-direct for latimes.com and social channels as needed
Requirements:
  • At least seven years of professional experience including magazine design
  • A portfolio of work that demonstrates excellence in art-directing illustrations, typography and photography
  • Strong multitasking, organizational and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
  • Strong working knowledge of design software such as CCI Newsgate (CUE), InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to design for digital stories and social media
  • A history of designing and developing alternate story forms
  • Effective at working in a team environment
This full-time, temporary position is expected to last nine months and will be based in El Segundo, Calif.

The pay scale the Company reasonably expects to pay for this position at the time of the posting is $39.59 to $45.77 and takes into account a wide range of factors including but not limited to skill set, experience, training, licenses, certifications, and other business or organizational needs. Compensation will be determined based on the above factors along with the requirements of the position. At the L.A.
